An eye specialist, also known as an ophthalmologist, is a medical doctor who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of eye diseases and disorders. They have completed medical school and additional specialized training in ophthalmology. Eye specialists can provide a range of services, including vision exams, prescription of eyeglasses or contact lenses, treatment of eye infections and injuries, management of glaucoma and cataracts, and performing surgical procedures such as LASIK, cataract surgery, and corneal transplants. They may work in private practices, hospitals, or academic settings, and are typically licensed by their state’s medical board.
